Information About Rye, NY
Our Community
The City of Rye is a wonderful place that offers amazing urban amenities, combined with the more rural beauty of the Long
Island shoreline. We are positioned along two protected miles of Long Island shore claiming our very own harbor plus a variety
of sandy beaches, both public and private. Although Rye is the smallest city in New York, being six square miles, its
population nears 17,000. It is governed by a Mayor and six-member City Council. Rye was founded in 1660, and is primarily
residential in character. We offer a wide variety of architectural styles which provide an interesting diversity of living choices.
We also boast a bustling, charming downtown filled with quaint shops and upscale boutiques, surrounding our residents, many
of whom commute to Manhattan, with the flavor of a real “village” .
Rye's Educational and Cultural Facilities
Known for academic excellence, the Rye City School District has three elementary schools and a combined junior and senior
high school, all of which offer low student-to-teacher ratios. 94% of Rye High School graduates go on to higher education.
Private school options are also available at Rye Country Day School, School of the Holy Child, Resurrection School and, in
Purchase, the Japanese Language Keio Academy.
Recreational Facilities
in Rye
Rye provides for a wealth of entertainment options, many of which take full advantage of its proximity to the stunning yet easily
accessible Long Island Sound. Beaches, woodlands and nature preserves add to the uniqueness of Rye’s lifestyle. Additionally,
the amenities of a variety of country clubs are available, including the notable Westchester Country Club, home of the
famed Buick Golf Classic. The Rye Golf Club, for Rye residents, offers a waterfront 18-hole course with putting green, Olympic
sized pool and dining facilities at the elegant Whitby Castle Clubhouse. For sailing enthusiasts, the City Boat Marina and
private boatyards are available. In addition, Rye is home to two tennis court sites, the Rye Arts Center, YMCA and of course,
historic Rye Playland Amusement Park.
Rye Transportation
Extremely convenient for commutation, Rye is twenty-three miles from Manhattan and thirty-seven minutes by Metro North
express train to Grand Central Station. Interstate Routes 287, 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway are also easily accessed.
Westchester County Airport offers a very attractive option for local residents with many non-stop flights daily to major hubs,
as well as LaGuardia Airport and JFK International Airport. Which can be reached by car within a half hour to 45 minutes
driving time.
